One more blog today and I am finally caught up on the things I have wanted to blog about but have not had the time/resources!

Over Christmas my mom and dad got the kids a book called Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. Basically it is a story of a cat named Pete that has a favorite shirt with four groovy buttons he sings a song about. Much to his misfortune his buttons keep popping off but does Pete cry? Goodness no! Buttons come and buttons go…he keeps on signing. I love it! I grew up with my mom singing 24/7 around the house. When things were good we sang, when things were bad, we sang to cheer up, while getting ready in the morning me and my sister could be found singing songs in harmony in the bathroom while fixing our hair. Cooking in the kitchen simply couldn’t be done without breaking out in song. I remember at some point in life realizing this was not the norm, but never the less it is definitely something that has carried on to my own home with the addition of dancing ![]()
Jackson was actually the one that was gifted the book, but Isabel has simply fallen in love with Pete and if you heard her say, “Goodness no, buttons come, buttons go” in the sweetest voice ever and bust out in a dance and song about her groovy buttons you would have no choice but to fall in love with Pete too. After being inspired by my friend Astrid and her fun venture into making books come to life for her daughter Tilly I have been looking for ways to do the same. So I decided that the kids needed a Pete the Cat of their very own with a yellow shirt and “popable” buttons.
I made his body out of some blue jean jegging material I got at Joann, and the yellow shirt, buttons, eyes, nose and belly button are all felt.

The buttons are able to pop on and off with snaps I added. (I used a snap kit I got in the Babyville section with a gift card to Joann Fabric. They are the kind on cloth diapers and they have come in so so handy on so many projects!)

Once all of Pete’s buttons are gone he realizes it’s all good because he still has his belly button.

After finishing him I saw that they actually make a Pete the Cat and there are some other books in which he keeps his cool in stressful situations. So if you want to get one of your own and aren’t feeling crafty you can probably find one online. Either way I definitely recommend giving him a read.

What a great blog, Terri. You’ve made me want to read Pete the Cat. I love how creative you are and I laughed at your memories of your mom singing 24/7 because our mom (Granny) did the same and I’m told that her mom, Oma also would break into song, but hers was often in German, so it runs in your genes!. I’m so glad your children are singing AND dancing their childhood experiences. thanks for sharing.
Aunt Betsy
Thanks! It most definitely runs in the genes! It makes my heart so happy when I see Isabel singing and dancing around the house
I love this blog, It make me get teary eyed reading it. I am glad you love singing and I still get comments about having a song for every occasion, just ask the ladies I work with. I also can’t imagine families not singing about things. Pete turned out so cute and I saw more Pete the Cat books coming out this spring!!!
Thanks for teaching me how to always keep things fun and light hearted. I love you Mom!
Great blog and I already love Pete the Cat. May need to get one when Ray’s daughter has her baby.
Definitely! Just let me know
